Gibberellins, auxins and cytokinins were produced by an Arthrobacter sp. grown in arnmonium-limited chemostat culture. Differences in the production of the three substances occurred in response to changes in growth rate.

The purpose of the present work was to investigate the effect of different nutritional and physical factors on phytohormone production by an Arthrobacter sp. that has previously been reported to produce auxins and gibberellins (Grappelli et al., 1972) and cytokinins (Grappelli & Pietrosanti, 1975). This paper reports the first results obtained in ammonium-limited chemostat culture of A . giacomelloi grown at different dilution rates.

Many bacterial chitinases have been purified and characterized from the species of Streptomyces, Bacillus, Aeromonas, Alteromonas, Xanthomonas, Enterobacter, Serratia and Clostridium. Although three strains of yeast or fungal cell wall lytic Arthrobacter produced a chitinase(s) and used chitin as a carbon source, there have not been detailed studies on chitinase from Arthrobacter.

The N-terminal 15 amino acids of the 32-kDa chitinase from the protein fraction showed homology with internal sequences of chitinases from S. maltophilia 34S1, Streptomyces thermoviolaceus, Amycolatopsis methanolica, Streptomyces splicatus, Streptomyces lividans, Janthinobacterium lividum, and Arthrobacter spp.
